Scots quality meat board to widen

THE steering group set up to preside over the establishment of a new Scottish Quality Meat Council (SQMC) has conceded the need for wider representation on the board of directors.

The Institute of Auctioneers is one of a number of bodies which is expected to get a seat on the new organisation, after Scotlands rural affairs minister Ross Finnie was made aware of concerns.

The council is expected to open for business by April. It will assume responsibility for running farm assurance schemes and for promoting beef, lamb and pork.

These roles are currently undertaken by the Scotch Quality Beef & Lamb Association (SQBLA) and the Scottish Pig Industry Initiative (SPII).
