Scots to tighten up on unused crofts

THE new Scottish Parliament plans to take a tough line with crofters who fail to use their land.

The Parliament will act on a Crofters Commission recommendation that crofters should be forced to sub-let if their properties become derelict.

Some 40% of the estimated 17,000 crofts in the Scottish Highlands and Islands are said to be under-used. About 10% are owned or tenanted by absentees.

The commissions proposals include rules governing the succession to tenancies and also measures to ensure local people can afford to buy properties.
