Sewel hints at help to boost Scottish beef

LORD SEWEL, the Scottish Office agriculture minister, raised the possibility of money to promote Scottish beef yesterday (Wednesday).

He said he would consider offering financial help if he was satisfied that existing money paid by the Meat and Livestock Commission and the Scotch Quality Beef and Lamb Association was well spent.

Sources quoted in The Herald said the confidence of overseas consumers would be difficult to obtain. Potential exporters will also have to expect that abattoir conditions will be much more rigorous.
