Sheep strategy appeal

MORE sheep producers are urgently needed to join the Northern Uplands Sheep Strategy for it to be successful, with all but 12 original members losing flocks to foot-and-mouth.

Crossing flocks have been hard hit by F&M, say MLC geneticist Gert Niewhof. "Swaledales may have lost up to half the flock."

The scheme aims to improve the financial viability of flocks in the northern uplands of England, following in the success of the Highlands and Islands Sheep Strategy and Welsh Sheep Strategy, say project collaborators.

NUSS was formed in August 2000 by the Northern Upland Moorland Regeneration Project, North of England Mule Association and MLC. It focuses on breed improvement, by introducing new technology such as recording, muscle and fat scanning and artificial insemination.
