SNFU to meet Scottish ministers
THE Scottish National Farmers Union (SNFU) has called for a crisis meeting of industry leaders ahead of talks with the Secretary of State for Scotland Donald Dewar and Scottish Agricultural Minister Lord Sewel.
George Lyon, SNFU union president, said there was widespread concern about job losses and the collapse of farm businesses.
He said most of the problems in Scotlands agriculture were political. Those problems included the beef export ban, interest rate policy, the refusal to implement European aid arrangements and the strong pound sucking in imports.
He said: “We need political solutions to these problems and our industry leaders will discuss ways of getting our message across to Government.”
