Spanish clawback

SPAIN is to pay back k331m (£211m) in subsidies to Brussels after its failure to apply set-aside properly and other inconsistencies in its management of the olive oil regime.

The clawback is by far the biggest element in the latest recovery of misspent funds by the commission. In total it is reclaiming k400m (£255m) with France, Germany and Italy the other main offenders.

"The clearance of accounts procedure is a vital instrument for controlling CAP expenditure," said agriculture commissioner, Franz Fischler. "It allows us to recover money paid out without sufficient guarantees of their legitimacy, or the reliability of the control and verification system." &#42
