Spelt wheat potential under the microscope

THIS years 2600ha (6400 acres) of seed spelt wheat, the only cereal attracting both seed and area aid, is out of kilter with traditional demand for the crop in well identified niche markets, according to Dalgety.

"Gross margin earnings potential for spelt wheat is questionable, particularly in the light of present harvest conditions and its lack of suitability under adverse conditions," says the firms David Neale.

"Our attention to risk management in the current climate does not take us down this crop route."n
