Start made on wheat

ANDREW FOSTER started combining wheat on Wednesday (22 August) at Ripon in North Yorkshire. He has combined oilseed rape and winter barley before.

He thinks wheat yields will be below average. He has started on Rialto and is concerned about quality: “Weve had a lot of rain in the last two weeks and so may struggle with the Hagberg, but we have not had any grains knocked out.”

Muscat winter barley has yielded a disappointing 5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre), which is about one tonne under average. He says the crop struggled in wet conditions.

Escort oilseed rape has been pleasing, yielding 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre), which is above average. The farm has heavy clay soil.
