Strengthen EU vet monitor
A CALL for more funds to strengthen the EU Commissions veterinary inspection service has been made by EU consumer affairs commissioner Emma Bonino.
She claimed that had the commission been allocated more resources in the past it could have been more effective in dealing with the BSE crisis.
Mrs Bonino, who has recently been handed responsibility for EU scientific veterinary advice and monitoring of food safety rules, stressed that advice would be sought from leading, and fully independent scientists.
Inspections and control would be implemented through the Food and Veterinary Inspection Office which is to be set up in Eire.
