Sussex pairs nose for award

A SUSSEX couple, who only started growing and producing wine four years ago, have won first place in the CLAs English and Welsh Wine of the Year competition.

Sue and Graham Mosey scooped the prize for the Fumé 1999 produced at their vineyard at Hidden Spring, Horam. "Our philosophy is simple – grow the best grapes and allow them to speak for themselves through our wines," says Sue.

One of the judges said: "Fumé 1999 is a buttery, dry white wine with complex fruit flavours enhanced by the use of the oak barriques which gives this wine a clean, very aromatic nose and a crisp and zingy palate."

The awards ceremony, which took place yesterday (May 24), also saw Jon Leighton among the prize winners for his Heritage Brut. Produced at his Valley Vineyards, Twyford, Berks, it was described by judges as a "light-bodied sparkling wine that is crisp, dry and refreshing".

Jon says: "Our wines are exported all over the world, with the Swiss, Germans and Japanese being particularly partial to English wines."
