Terror law to protect cull farmers
By FWi staff
NEW laws to curb animal rights terrorism are to be used to protect farmers and Ministry of Agriculture staff involved in badger trials, reports The Times.
Farm minister Nick Brown told the National Farmers Union AGM that farmers and MAFF staff were entitled to the protection.
The minister condemned the “intimidation and harassment” suffered, and said he had discussed threats to individuals with Home Secretary Jack Straw.
Mr Brown called for a parliamentary debate to discuss the possibility of killing more badgers to combat tuberculosis in cattle.
Delegates applauded him for saying bovine tuberculosis is an animal welfare issue for cattle and a human welfare issue for the families whose herds are affected.
