Time for the trade to pay its corner
Time for the trade to pay its corner
HARVEST 2000 will be the crunch for the ACCS scheme. Its success will depend on the trade putting its money where its mouth is, admits one ACCS board member.
"The consumer and merchant have got to put up, or shut up," says Cambs grower and NFU ACCS director, Adrian Peck.
He is adamant that ACCS is the right way forward for the combinable crops industry, but believes grower confidence in the scheme will suffer unless benefits, financial or otherwise, are seen this autumn.
Being in the scheme has stimulated best practice on his own Scotland Farm, Dry Drayton, he says. But now it is time that the market reflected that effort.
"By this harvest if there is not a clear advantage, I will have great difficulty in justifying the need to be assured. As far as I am concerned the trade wanted this scheme and if they are not prepared to give an advantage to ACCS members, then it is not worth being in."
