UK Delivered and Export Grain Prices

Tuesday, 13 June, 2000

  • Old crop wheat prices rose between 1 – 1.50/t last week. New crop wheat prices gained a more modest 50p to 1/t. Volumes traded were reportedly very low.
  • After rallying up to 2.50/t following last weeks ECB interest rate hike to 4.25%, delivered cereal prices quickly fell back to pre-Thursdays levels as French prices tumbled.
  • The strong old crop price gains largely reflected the weaker Pound/Euro rate, whereas falling French wheat prices restricted the smaller new crop price gains.
  • Only small volumes of fresh new crop business were reported last week, with continued shipper selling the most notable feature. According to trade sources, producers and consumers alike are unlikely to commit heavily for new crop, until the quality and quantity of the UK wheat crop is clearer.
  • UK Fob cereal prices firmed across the board last week, reflecting the weaker Pound/Euro. However, there continues to be only light demand for UK cereals.
  • Falling French and US cereal prices, however, limited currency-led UK price gains, especially for new crop positions.
  • Euro1 = 62.3p at time of writing.
