US farming takes to the Net

AMERICAN farmers are just starting to use the Internet this year to cut the costs on inputs and even market their products, according to the Financial Times.

It notes that the number of sites targeted at the farm sector has multiplied over the past 12 months to several dozen, ranging from bulletin boards to auction sites.

Many are not full-blown e-commerce facilities so far, but several described in the article are moving in that direction.

These include XSAg.com, offering an online auction system for chemicals; e-Markets, providing a bid automation service, and DirectAg.com, which aims to be a direct link between manufacturers and farmers.
