Weather rescues crop in Sub-continent

By FWi staff

LATE rains and a subsequent cold spell have rescued wheat yields in India and Pakistan, reports the Financial Times.

Crops had been threatened by an earlier long, dry spell which led the disaster management division of Indias agriculture department to issue a warning.

But the late rains now mean the crop will get full time to mature over 145 days.

India now expects to harvest 70 million tonnes. In Pakistan this years production is expected to be considerably less than the 22m harvested in 1999-2000.
