Photos: Farmers rescue sheep from snow drifts

Sheep farmers are counting the cost of heavy snow – feeding and rescuing buried livestock from deep drifts.

Rising temperatures have seen a thaw set in across much of the country, but farmers in many areas are still trying to locate and rescue livestock.

In the Scottish borders, shepherd and National Sheep Association ambassador Sion Morgan tweeted a picture of his flock at Galashiels.

The Welshman is in charge of 2,100 ewes on the home farm of a large farming enterprise, plus another 800 on a neighbouring hill estate.

Farmer’s wife Elizabeth Gray tweeted photos of sheep being dug out from a snowdrift on the North Yorkshire moors.

Peter Lane of Channel 5 News ensured more people were aware of the story by digging for sheep with farmer Darren Hough near Oldham.

In County Durham, snow plough drivers came to the rescue of two sheep buried up to their heads in drifting snow.

In Cumbria, the Boustead family battled to rescue sheep buried at Newbiggin on Lune near Kirkby Stephen.

A spare plough from Chris Acaster and AA Farm Services managed to help clear a path to get to sheep for feeding in the Derbyshire Pennines.

Rhian Hammond of NFU Cymru tweeted this photo of a large drift in mid-Wales.

After a busy few days, Nic Renison managed to find time for some sledging at Cannerheugh Farm, Renwick, Cumbria.
