Welsh forest ends up in French hands
A WELSH forest extending to 5039 acres and reckoned to be the largest privately owned plantation in the country has just been sold to a French investor.
Llanbrynmair in Powys was planted during the 1980s by various Schedule D investors, including pop star Cliff Richard.
Selling agent John Clegg & Co says over 500,000cu m of softwood will be harvested during the next 25 years.
Foot-and-mouth prevented a public offering and only two prospective purchasers were shown the property.
The pair both submitted bids and although the exact price has not been disclosed, sources say the winning bid was close to £2.5m. The buyer was represented by FPDSavills and Tilhill Forestry will continue with the management of the timber. *
