Wheat below average
WHEAT yields have been below average for Carl Juhl of Littlebury Farms near Saffron Walden. Weather has hindered continuous progress so far.
They have combined 60ha (150 acres) of Claire. It is yielding about 8t/ha (3.25t/acre) on second crops and 9.2t/ha (3.75t/acre) after set-a-side. “This is about 0.5t/acre down on average. The winter conditions are too blame.”
“Yesterday [16 August] was the first full day of combining without any interruptions from the weather. The moisture got down to 13.5%.”
Despite heavy dew he expected to start about 11am on Friday (17 August) morning. However he did miss the showers which crossed the region last night.
