Wheat crop down by a quarter – Defra
Monday, 15 October, 2001 | Summary table: Cereal production 2000-1 |
By FWi staff
THE UK wheat crop is estimated at 12 million tonnes this year, by Defra and National Statistics.
The first forecast for the 2001 crop is 28% down on last year, but is slightly higher than the NFUs estimate of 11.6m tonnes.
This is due to a somewhat heavier yield estimate of 7.2t/ha (2.9t/acre) compared with the NFUs 7t/ha (2.8t/acre).
Winter barley production is pegged at 2.8m tonnes, while spring barley is 46% up on last year, at 4.1m tonnes.
These minor adjustments are unlikely to have much impact on the market, which is concentrating on import calculations following recent negative policy changes in Brussels.
