Wheat performing well
DORSET farmer Nick Tory has been combining some good-quality and yielding wheat crops on the chalk soil. “Its been a good year for us.”
His 100ha (250 acres) of Malacca has yielded 12t/ha (4.9t/acre), which is above average. “The quality is OK, but with slightly low bushel of 75kg/hl.
“It should make low-class grade one milling with a 10-15 premium. The Hagberg is in the 350s and the protein is mostly good with a couple of samples below 13%.”
“Soissons has reached full spec easily.” The specific weight is 80kg/hl, Hagberg 296 and protein is 13.6%. “The GPS yield read 5t/acre (12.3t/ha), which is exceptional and we are waiting for this to be confirmed by the merchants.”
They were stopped over the weekend due to rain. “There is the quality issue. If the sun gets out I am still hopeful the Hagbergs will stay, but well have to wait and see.”
