Wheat started, variable conditions

DAVID PRICE, who farms at Evenjobb in Powys started combining Charger winter wheat yesterday before it started to rain. He has already finished winter barley and oilseed rape but believes he is very late for the time of year.

“After one round in the field it bucketed down and we had quarter of an inch. But the crop looked like it may do 9.9t/ha (4t/acre).” The crop started to fall down a month ago after more rain. The Charger was drilled on 19th September, on light medium loam.

“Oilseed rape harvest was about as good as it gets. It was dry all the way through the growing season.” It yielded 4.2t/ha (1.75t/acre).

Barley was variable, with Jewel ranging from 4.9-6.2t/ha (2-2.5t/acre), which is below the expected 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).

He says they should make good progress if the weather improves. There are also Gerald winter Oats, which he says look well.
