Wheat yields down
WHEAT yields are down on average at the Scott Abbott Arable Crop Station, west of Peterborough.
Research manager John Ward says, “We started wheat ten days ago and it has been stop start ever since.”
“Savannah and Claire have yielded 1-2t/ha below average and there is no distinction between the two.” The crop has been combined at 16% moisture and below.
On Thursday (16 August) rain held them up during the afternoon and then a heavy downpour in the evening stopped them completely.
“Im not too worried. There is no shedding or sprouting yet.”
The farm is based on limestone, with a well drained shallow soil. “We normally like to drill early. Some of the crop was drilled in September, but some of it was drilled in January.”
