Yet-to-be-born calf in focus

A CANADIAN Holstein heifer calf will be the highlight of an open day and sale at the Peel Park herd at Brandsby, York, later this month – even though the calf is yet to be born.

The calf, by Shen-Val NV LM Formation and out of the renowned show cow Acme Star Lily, is due to be born in Canada in November. It will be offered by Andrew Heaton on Apr 28 with full buyer satisfaction. And the price will include delivery to the UK.

As a price indicator, Mr Heaton says the first seven daughters of Star Lily to be sold at public auction made $120,000 (Canadian) -and they may have been under valued.

Last year, Star Lily was Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair, All American and All Canada four year-old, reserve grand champion at the World Diary Expo and was nominated Cow of the Year in Canada.

Also on offer at Brandsby will be 30 other lots representing the cream of the Peel Park pedigree herd. The farms dairying facilities have recently been upgraded, including a new parlour and the herd has been expanded to 250 cows.

The open day will focus on producing milk in the face of falling prices and guaranteeing customer satisfaction through farm assurance. The American experience of meeting falling prices will also be debated. &#42
