Yield variable in Dorset
YIELDS have been variable for Sherborne Castle Estates in Dorset. Farm manager Paul Carter says, “yields are generally lower, but it is not surprising considering the wet autumn. Its better than expected.”
Soil on the farm varies from stone brash to heavy clay.
Claire has yielded up to 9.3t/ha (3.75t/acre), Malacca 8.5t/ha (3.4t/acre) and Reaper 7.5t/ha (3t/acre). The samples are now being analysed. “The yield this year will be average about 8t/ha (3.2t/acre), but wed normally expect 8.5-8.75t/ha (3.4-3.5t/acre).
Gerald winter oats have performed well with good quality. They yielded 7.6t/ha (3.1t/acre).
