Yorks smallholding decision deferred
NORTH Yorkshire county councillors have deferred making a decision on the disposal of the councils smallholdings estate.
They want more information, independent advice, and to consult with tenants before making a judgment.
The NFU had protested that the £60m valuation put on the vacant possession of the estate, equating to £13,950/ha (£5500/acre), was unrealistic and was framed to persuade councillors to vote in favour of a sell-off.
Richard Ellison, the NFUs north-east regional director, welcomed the deferment. "This breathing space will provide an opportunity for county councillors to establish the full facts about county farms and the important role they play in assisting new entrants, helping the rural economy, and maintaining the countryside.
"We are pleased that smallholders are to be consulted. We must ensure that the consultation is effective", Mr Ellison added.
