YOUNG FARMERS – ROUNDUP

21 March 1997

THE 1997 Mr and Miss Somerset Young Farmer titles have been won by Richard Banwell of Wedmore YFC and Barbara Hodges of Wincanton YFC. They will both represent Somerset in the South West Area eliminator for the YFC member of the year competition.

&#8226 Jenny Tunna of Dove Valley YFC won the female section of Staffordshire federations member of the year contest and Mark Madders of Eccleshall took the male section award. Jenny was declared the overall winner and goes forward to West Midlands competition.

&#8226 Worksop and District YFC, Notts is trying to trace past members and friends to help them celebrate the clubs 50th aniversary. A booklet of memorabilia is being produced and a dinner dance is being held at South Farm, Letwell on June 27. Contact Mrs Z Smith (nee Hague) 01909-721559).

&#8226 Letting more people know what the YFC has to offer is the aim of Devon county federations new chairman, Graham Cheriton (27).

Graham, who comes from Oldridge Barton, Crediton, and has been a member of Newton St Cyres club for 10 years, is living proof of the YFC saying: "You dont have to be one to be one." He is not a farmer, but an electrical contractor.

"Young Farmers is the best youth movement in the country," says enthusiastic Graham. "It is the only organisation that the members run." But he is full of praise for the support that they get from parents, advisory members and officers.

Liz Harvey (26) of Totnes YFC is the new vice-chairman and Jason Quance (25) of Shebbear YFC is the new junior vice-chairman.

&#8226 Newton St Cyres YFC celebrates its 60th anniversary on April 18 with a dinner at Langstone Cliffs, Dawlish. All past members welcome. Telephone Jill Lee (01361-777865) for tickets.
