YOUR FOURTH CHANCE TO WIN A JD TRACTOR
YOUR FOURTH CHANCE TO WIN A JD TRACTOR
Its week four of the spring
competition and another
chance to win a £30,000
tractor
FANCY winning a tractor for no more than the price of stamp? You can, thanks to a bit of teamwork between farmers weekly and Harrogate-based farming insurance specialist AIUA.
It couldnt be easier, either. Just read the text on this page, answer the simple question printed under the headline and then fill in the coupon that will appear in next weeks (Apr 14) issue of FW. Send the coupon to us, keep your fingers tightly crossed and you might be lucky enough to have a new Deere 6010 in your machinery shed come the summer.
AIUA (Agricultural Insurance Underwriting Agencies) is the UKs largest independent provider of farm insurance cover, but you may not have heard of them before. Thats because they sell through brokers rather than direct. In fact they have been marketing farming insurance products since 1981 and now sell on behalf of Norwich Union, Cornhill and Royal & SunAlliance.
Over the past three weeks weve looked at some of AIUAs products. This week we take a different tack by passing on some of the companys advice on how to reduce insurance costs, issued in response to the continuing slump in farm incomes. Theyre in the form of Dos and Donts.
Farm buildings
DONT reduce your sums insured. The real purpose of insurance is to receive payment when you have a major loss. This will fail if you lower the rebuilding costs.
DO consider whether all buildings should be insured against all perils or whether some can be protected against fire, lightning, explosion and aircraft only.
DO think about increasing the excess. If you are prepared to self-insure a small proportion of the risk, substantial premium savings area available.
DO calculate a global sum insured for all your buildings on all sites. This is much easier to calculate and guards against uninsured buildings in the event of a claim.
DO include grain driers, handling equipment, bins and stationary machinery in the buildings. Such fixed plant can be insured more cheaply at the buildings rate.
DO ensure that buildings are covered on the basis of reinstatement in modern materials. In some schedules, rebuilding costs are calculated in traditional materials which, in the event of a claim, would probably be rejected as an option in favour of a clearspan shed.
DO make sure that listed buildings are fully insured for rebuilding in traditional materials.
DO examine insurance of walls, gates and fences. Because this is on a First Loss basis, the sum insured can probably be reduced. What about deleting this item and saving some premium?
