Spring barley summary

Results are in from 19 Recommended List trial sites and the control varieties are averaging 7.38t/ha, which is below the five-year average (7.48 t/ha). Most of the treated Scottish trials have yielded well, compared with those in England.

Spring barley variety selection

Results from 2020 show there is not much to choose between the top-yielding malting varieties.

Newly recommended variety Tungsten and control variety Diablo are both on 103%, with newly recommended UK variety Splendor and established varieties Cosmopolitan and Laureate on 102%.

The other newly recommended varieties are Firefoxx, which has finished on 101% and Iconic (recommended for the West region), which has done relatively well in 2020, on 100%.

The two feed varieties on the list, Fairway and Prospect, both newly recommended, have both finished on 102% in the treated trials.
