Spring barley summary
Results are in from 10 Recommended List trial sites and the control varieties are averaging 7.79t/ha, which is higher than the five-year average (7.55 t/ha). The AHDB says a more robust picture of 2020 will emerge when additional trial results are published, including further data from the key spring barley areas in Scotland.
Spring barley variety selection
Initial results for malting varieties show the control variety Diablo at 103%, along with the newly recommended variety Tungsten. Cosmopolitan and Laureate are just behind on 102%. The newly recommended UK varieties, Splendor and Firefoxx, continue to disappoint a little, at 101% and 100%, respectively. The other newly recommended malting variety (West region) Iconic is also at 101%.
The two feed varieties on the list, Fairway and Prospect sit a little way behind the leaders on yield at this stage at 102% and 101%, respectively.
