FOOD SECURITY IS AIM OF NEW CAMPAIGN
A CAMPAIGN TO highlight the importance of food security is being mounted in the run-up to the next election by agricultural consortium, the Commercial Farmers Group (CFG)
.A spokesman for the organisation, which is made up of farmers, academics and agri-businesses, says a recent publication by the Office of National Statistics had prompted the move.
It showed that food imports rose by 24.6% to 19.1bn between 1992 and 2002. The annual balance of payments deficit for food during the same period went up from ÂŁ4.7bn to ÂŁ9.8bn. “We intend to make certain that all candidates in the forthcoming election are made aware of the case for national food security,” says CFG member and Yorks producer, Henry Fell.
