NPA says superstores stock too little British
Supermarkets are still stocking too little British bacon and ham, says the National Pig Association.
The organisation’s July Porkwatch survey shows home-grown meat accounted for a meagre 30% of sales. In Tesco only 41% of the bacon and 21% of the ham on display was British, it claimed.
But fresh pork sales were more encouraging, with almost 80% of produce sourced in Britain. Tesco said over 90% of its fresh pork was from British farmers.
Sainsbury’s, however, was below average, with a quarter of its fresh pigmeat from abroad. This was due to its policy of sourcing cheaper, low-welfare loins for its tertiary brand labels, said the NPA.
