PHOTOS: Snow-hit farmers battle through the white-out

The heaviest snow fall for many years has hit farming across the north and north west of the UK.

As the snow swept through, driven into drifts as deep as 25ft, it buried whole flocks of sheep, brought down buildings and left roads all but impassable.

Our pictures, taken by farmers, the Ulster Farmers Union members and press photographers, capture some of the startling images from the worst-hit regions.

  • Chapelton Farm, Castle Douglas, owned by Duncan Biggar, saw 10in of snow and 6ft drifts

  • Sheep in Cumbria clamoured to get to a welcome food drop

  • Dwarfed by drifts, this walker makes use of a road cleared by tractors in Dinbren, north Wales

  • A farmer pauses to snap this shot before rescuing his sheep

  • Country Anrtim farmer James McHenry in the remains of his lambing shed, which collapsed under the weight of snow, killing livestock

  • Somewhere under all that snow is the Lake District’s Kirkstone Pass to Ambleside

  • Ulster farmers rescue an exhausted sheep from the snow
