National Trust launches food award
The National Trust has launched an award to promote and recognise those among its 2000 tenants who have launched food products using produce derived from its farms, orchards and gardens.
The award recognises high environmental and animal welfare standards, high-quality production methods and great tasting food and drink.
All livestock and dairy products must be certified organic or RSPCA Freedom Food assured. Arable-based products must have organic certification, LEAF marque accreditation or be of conservation grade to qualify.
Food and drink products are then subject to a taste panel, where the key criteria are appearance, aroma, texture and flavour.
Most of the food and drink that has received the award will be available direct from the producers, through farm shops and local outlets. Some of the produce will also be available through supermarkets in the area where the food and drink has been produced.
Rob Macklin, the Trust’s head of agriculture, said: “It is important for the National Trust, as a major land owner, to provide that extra level of support to our tenants, who are leading the way in promoting local and seasonal food.”
