• A COUNTER dedicated to Welsh meat was unveiled by Tesco at its flagship store in Cardiff Road, Newport, this week. If sales prove successful then the firm will consider introducing similar counters in its outlets throughout the country.
uPARLIAMENTS Environmental Audit Committee has announced that it will hold an investigation into the governments arrangements for co-ordinating policy on the development and use of genetically modified organisms . The inquiry will focus on implications for environment and food safety.
• ASDA has offered farmers around Wolstanton, Staffs, the chance to hold the first supermarket-based farmers market this weekend. More than 20 producers are involved and will be offering local produce, including cheeses and ice-creams.
The farmers will retain all the proceeds from the initiative which resulted from Asdas partnership with Shropshire-based Mercian Marketing, a group set up to help farmers identify new products and markets.
