Waste management licence advice service launched

A new advisory service to help growers generate income from spreading waste to land has been launched by Agrogate, the farm business advisory arm of Agrovista.

“Farmers are generally aware of the new legislation in dealing with waste they produce on farm,” Agrogate team leader Phil Edenborough notes. “But many farmers are not aware of opportunities to generate income through the spreading of, for example, diary or vegetable waste to land for agricultural benefit or ecological improvement.”

Such treatment can only be made after a licence has been granted by the Environment Agency however, Mr Edenborough says. “This may seem complex and costly, but the potential financial returns can be highly significant.

“We have been working in this area for some time, and can take the pain out of applying for a licence, and give a better chance of success.”

The firm has made a number of successful applications for growers, some of which are generating tens of thousands of pounds in income for the farmer providing the land.

“Many companies need a solution to their waste disposal issues to avoid paying costly landfill charges. It is to their and growers’ benefit that land can be used as a disposal route for certain types of non-harmful waste.”
